Most citizen who are entering the world of wooden railway building start out building layouts on the floor. This is great in many ways - you have lots of room to spread out. This is especially good for the youngest builders who tend to build long lines of track. Children love to crawl nearby on the floor driving Thomas the Tank machine or other engines nearby and nearby the tracks they have built.

Building on the floor can have some disadvantages, however. It can be heartbreaking for a young builder to have to take apart his masterpiece when playtime is over. Layouts on the floor are also vulnerable to stampeding toddlers or pets and get broken apart easily. For this reason, many families of wooden railway fans often resolve to spend in a train table, where they can leave layouts put together when playtime is over. building on a table also brings the layout to the excellent level for itsybitsy engineers who love to spend hours driving their trains on the layouts. For some, the best beginning table explication is learning Curve's 2-in-1 Grow With Me Playboard, with one side of the board having grooved track layouts built right into the board. When the child gets older, the board can be turned over for a traditional "flat" building surface. (The Thomas Train Table is sold separately).

Train Table For Kids

The biggest challenge to building on a train table is the lack of space, you can't genuinely spread the layout out as much as you may be used to for building on the floor. This can be frustrating for young children who aren't experienced builders, commonly beginning builders just like to build long tracks that go "nowhere". The key for flourishing building on a playtable is to use tight curves.

There are two track pieces that I assuredly recommend having on hand for building on train or playtables. First, have lots of short curve track pieces (3.5-inch curves). These allow for much tighter curves than the longer 6-inch curve pieces. Second, T-Switch tracks are great space savers for building in tight spaces.

The best way to learn is to get building! If you need inspiration, there are lots of layouts ready on the web to study or duplicate. Try Googling "Thomas Wooden Railway Track Layouts" for some layouts that are designed to fit on playtables. Don't worry if you don't have every bridge or destination shown in the diagram - it's fun and easy to substitute with quarterly track or other destinations.

If you think wooden construction blocks are just for miniature kids...think again! There are many fun and curious things even middle school students can enjoy doing. Most of these will work best on a hard, smooth exterior such as linoleum or hardwood, rather than rugs or carpet. For some of them, you can even work on a tabletop.

1. Build a tower as high and narrow as you can. Count the whole of wooden blocks you used and take pictures. Look up the world description for a tower of wooden blocks. Part yours. Did you come close?

2. Build a castle and decorate it with paper pennants glued to toothpicks. Make knights and ladies out of paper figures cut out from magazines. Add a photograph of yourself and tape on a paper crown. Congratulations! You are now ruler of a miniature realm.

3. Originate a maze for your pet hamster and time how long it takes him to get through. If he seems unmotivated, give him a miniature training. Start him off easy with a straight run with food at the end, so he gets the idea (it helps if he's hungry). Next add a turn or two. Ultimately put him in a full-fledged maze with many turns and dead ends. Time him on successive runs. Does his speed improve?

4. If your wooden construction blocks are of many separate sizes and shapes, it can be as fun and curious as any puzzle to try to stack them compactly together into the smallest potential space.

5. Figure miniature bowling lanes with wooden blocks and challenge your friends to a game. Use colorful cap erasers for bowling pins and marbles for bowling balls. Deduct points for hitting the block walls of the lane. Make the game more curious by keeping the lanes fairly long, and the erasers just far enough apart that you have to hit them exactly right to get a strike. Make the game easier by shortening the lanes and positioning the erasers a miniature closer together.

6. Build a spiral staircase. This might wish a lot of construction blocks to perform the full effect, but it will be a lot of fun.

7. Build an arch completely made of wooden blocks. For help, look up arches in your encyclopedia. If your wooden construction blocks do not consist of a keystone shape, you might need to Originate one out of cardboard for the top.

8. Build a special "domino city" and thought about run a line of dominos in, out, around, up, down and over the construction blocks. Set up a small bell at the end (one of those miniature Christmas jingle bells tied on a ribbon works well). Push the first domino down.

9. Surprise your mom by setting the table early for supper. Surprise her more by thought about balancing each water glass on a stack of wooden construction blocks. Explain solemnly that you couldn't find any stemware, so you improvised as best you could.

10. If you have a cat or dog that's a good sleeper (or a big brother), thought about build a "house" right over top of them out of wooden blocks. Yes, consist of a roof (you can reserve it with strips of cardboard if your longest blocks aren't quite long enough for the roof base). If it is a large dog, or your big brother, you may have only enough blocks for your house to cover his head. That's okay. Be sure to be nearby when they wake up! Or perhaps, if it's your big brother, you should be very far away.
