The hobbyist can always build from scratch a model train table convenient to one's specification and preference with the ready space at hand or in one's own garage or spare room.
For instance, there are scale model train sets and kits made ready in the shop which contain portable layouts. These are in fact great for kids and for beginners. The layouts come with a foam base covered with grass mat, construction structures, details and add-ons which could in fact be set up right in your own living room. For the real hobbyist, this is a taboo.
Train Table For Kids
The Hobbyist or the railroader dares to meet the challenge of construction one's own model train table and one doesn't even have to have a table. In the long run one would want to build up a permanent layout and it is ready in the shop as the Fast Build, No Saw Train table. It would simply need a few tools and a bit of carpentry skills.
Here's the handyman's formula of construction; first, mount the folding table legs, as provided for, to the sheet of plywood along with the tee nuts and engine screws. A leg set is mounted 18" in from the ends of the board and centered from the edges. Secondly, glue to attach the 1"x 3" stringers and the 3" wood screws 12" from the table ends and set back 10" from each edge on either side of the legs. Thirdly, set the foam on a flat space and apply adhesive to the surface. Align the upside down table with the edges of the foam pressing down gluing both surfaces. Apply weight and allow the glue to set up for 24 hours. Turn over the completed table and lock the legs down. There you are ready to set up your hasten on you own model train table.
Roughly, it will cost the hobbyist a 0 after getting the needed lumber and cuts required to build a model train table. However, the materials needed are ordinarily found just nearby the house-hold, mend shed or garage.
