Are you planning a vacation to Hawaii? Wouldn't it be nice to have a local for a tour guide? If you want to see the real Hawaii, come along with me for a scenic drive on the Leeward side of Oahu.
The Leeward side of each of the Hawaiian islands has a desert climate. It's generally drier and has less vegetation but it's no less beautiful. From Honolulu take the H1 west (not the H2) keep going west until you get to the 750 Kunia. This is a two lane road that is less traveled. There are gorgeous views of the Waianae mountain range and the pineapple fields. ultimately you will curve back to the H2 just keep going North.
Train Table For Kids
The first stop is at the Dole Pineapple plantation for all snacks pineapple. They have pineapple ice cream, chocolates, salsas, turnovers, and just fruit. It's a great place for the kids because they have a maze and a train ride too.
As you traveling supplementary north you will find many opportunities for scenic views of the Pacific. Drive slowly to savor the experience. When you head down the mountain side towards Haleiwa the view is amazing
My next stop is in Waialua. Supervene the signs to the Old Sugar Mill. There you will find a locals surf shop and the Northshore soap factory. I like to get the kukui nut oil. It's great for sunburns. The surf shop has board shorts, fun souvenirs, and fun gifts to take back home.
Ok it's not all about shopping... Don't forget eating too! Take the next turn to Haleiwa. This historic surfers town has a great option of eclectic shops and cafes. A few of my favorites include Konos, Coffee Gallery, Pizza Bob's, and Jameson's By The Sea. Keep in mind that most shops close in this town about 5pm. So if you want to go shopping take a break from the beach and check out the town.
The Northshore beaches are world famous. Look for the surfers at Waimea Bay, Sunset, and the Banzai Pipeline. Each year in December, the Vans Triple Crown of surfing is held here. Be sure to check out their website for more details.
My recommendation is to go "beach hoping" along the coast starting at Haleiwa Beach Park. Then Supervene the road to Three Tables, Pupukea, and Sharkes Cove. If you Supervene Hwy 83 around the island there are many other beach parks each with a different view and if you pay attention... different sand.
This driving adventure will take a full day. However, if it is the real Hawaii that you crave then this is the drive for you.
